I’m turning over a new LEAF. Yeah, pun intended. I’m going GREEN. Last year I went off course. I guess we all do that from time to time. I stopped exercising. Stopped eating healthy. Didn’t meditate as much as I used to. WOW. I could sit here and wonder why…or I could just say….today is the only thing that matters. And so…I’m turning over that new leaf.

I started exercising. Eating healthy. Meditating. Taking care of me. Life catches us off guard sometimes and we fall back on unhealthy patterns. The best I can do is to catch myself, and drag my butt back on course.

So I’ve been juicing veggies every day: Kale. Spinach. Cucumbers. Broccolli. Sprouts. Carrots. Beets. Celery. Wheat germ. Tomatoes. Yummy!!!

Today I started doing the wheat grass thing. I bought a juicer especially for that. One shot in the morning and one shot at night. Here’s why:

Wheat Grass:

Increases red blood-cell count and lowers blood pressure. It cleanses the blood, organs and gastrointestinal tract of debris. Wheatgrass also stimulates metabolism and the body’s enzyme systems by enriching the blood. It also aids in reducing blood pressure by dilating the blood pathways throughout the body.

Stimulates the thyroid gland, correcting obesity, indigestion, and a host of other complaints.

Restores alkalinity to the blood. The juice’s abundance of alkaline minerals helps reduce over-acidity in the blood. It can be used to relieve many internal pains, and has been used successfully to treat peptic ulcers, ulcerative colitis, constipation, diarrhea, and other complaints of the gastrointestinal tract.

Is a powerful detoxifier, and liver and blood protector. The enzymes and amino acids found in wheatgrass can protect us from carcinogens like no other food or medicine. It strengthens our cells, detoxifies the liver and bloodstream, and chemically neutralizes environmental pollutants.

Fights tumors and neutralizes toxins. Recent studies show that wheatgrass juice has a powerful ability to fight tumors without the usual toxicity of drugs that also inhibit cell-destroying agents. The many active compounds found in grass juice cleanse the blood and neutralize and digest toxins in our cells.

Read more on this link: Benefits of Wheat Grass

So turn over a new leaf with me and here’s a happy and healthy 2012.

With Joy,

Pat

Sitting on the deck of a cedar log cabin in N.C., I soak in the clean crisp air. The birdies are attacking the bird feeder with a fury…scaring away the squirrel that’s been munching on the seeds nonstop since we filled it up. I’m bundled up head to toe since it’s 27 degrees. But I am in heaven. THIS is what I love. The mountains. Wildlife. Serenity. I am so grateful.

This is my much-deserved vacation. I’ve been working like a fiend for the past 5 months on my new book (in 3 languages), my new website (in 3 languages) and my Discovery documentary. One year ago my chemo fog hadn’t lifted yet and there would have been no way that I would have been able to juggle all of these projects at once. But then it lifted…2 years after the end of my one year of chemo. And I came back…hard and strong to fulfill this guided “directive” to help others through my dance with cancer.

Many thought I was over-working, which I was. Others thought I needed to focus on making money. Which of course, is important since I have many bills to pay. But I trusted. I trusted that all would be well. That I would be taken care of. That the Universe is abundance and that as long as we’re true to ourselves and our Divine purpose, we will be provided for.

Here I am enjoying a one-week break at a heavenly sanctuary. Trusting and believing. It works.

I’ve released all the work now, in a sense. I put it out there, now it’s up to God, the Universe, to take it from here. I will trust that they will go and do the work they need to do, helping others. All I do is ask for guidance. A far stretch from the days before cancer when all I ever did was control. What a hilarious thought. We think we’re in control. We’re so not. As I always say, all we can control is how we respond to the events in our life…and what we do with them.

So, now, I trust. Release. Let go. Let God. And ask for guidance every day…to do the work that I’m supposed to do while on this earth.

As I prepared for this trip…I threw out my back. Just days before a “hiking” trip. My boyfriend suffered a pulled hamstring during a tennis tournament he was playing in the day before our trip. Hmmmm. Coincidence? So here we are. Unable to hike. We could find ourselves miserable. Complaining. And really self-destructing this vacation.

Instead, we’re enjoying doing….nothing. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do here, but I always end up doing….something.

I guess this was meant to be.

Heaven on earth. Silence. Stillness. Nothing. I am grateful.

With Joy,

Pat

I’ve been on a rollercoaster ride for the past 3 years. Somehow, I managed to tap into peace and positivity, even during the most difficult moments of my healing journey. It wasn’t always easy, but I did what I had to in order to step through the difficult moments as quickly as possible and not buy real estate on that land of negativity and worry.

A huge part of my healing was due to the support of my family and friends. They carried me on their wings to healing. They were there for me almost 24/7 for an entire year. Angels…they’re angels on earth and I will forever be grateful to them.

And yes…I’m also a positive person. Does my state of my mind have something to do with the fact that I’m now cancer-free and living life to the fullest? No doubt in my mind. Having that positive mindset has kept me and continues to keep me focused on my daily goals: to continue living a healthy life, to live in joy and peace, not to worry, to live with purpose and be of service, to savor every delicious moment.

Today, my life is normal. Normal in a different way. I’m not a workaholic anymore. I find beauty in everything…from the tiniest of insects to the grandest of mountains. I give up control to Spirit/God…and trust that everything will unfold as it’s supposed to. I am able to receive and feel good in it…knowing that it’s not all about doing. I’m learning that the world will keep spinning, even when things are not done…my way. There is a balance I never had before. I trust more. I’m at peace. There is no preoccupation with cancer. I see it as a blessing in my life that has led me to new people, understandings and experiences. I now follow my heart more than before and give dreams a chance to take off. One of my dreams has always been photography and soon I will have my second photo exhibit.

A few weeks ago I was just given the “All Clear.” It was a very emotional day that really took me by surprise. All I could say…or think was THANK YOU. Thank you for my life, my friends and family, my angels, my experiences, the air that I’m breathing…the car that I drive, my pets, my delicious new boyfriend, even my wrinkles and extra pounds…they prove I’m alive! They’re all a part of ME. One of my favorite sayings comes to mind: “If you don’t think every day is a good day, try missing one.” Cavett Robert

I don’t plan on missing a single day of my life…no matter what it brings. Join me on this fabulous rollercoaster. Whether we’re climbing uphill or screaming on our way down….enjoy the ride. It’s the only one we have…at least in this lifetime.

Lots of love! Pat

Peace & Veggies

by Dr. Steven M. Newman

Healthy pH Levels

Anyone that owns a swimming pool knows that chlorine kills bugs. Bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic cells have a tough time surviving in the alkaline environment (higher pH level) of chlorinated water.

It turns out cancer cells are not much different. Human cancer cells are genetically mutated “normal” cells. All of us have them. By naturally increasing your pH level, you help create an alkaline environment within your bodies that makes it very difficult on cancer cells. Stop right there…I’m not recommending you drink chlorine, but I do suggest you make some changes in your diet that enables your body to destroy these mutated cells before they proliferate.

Plant it, grow it, pick it, wash it then eat it. I usually skip the first three steps, but you get the idea. An alkaline diet is chock full of fresh, raw fruits and vegetables. Raw food tastes better and has more nutritional value. For those of you that get bored with raw veggies, try juicing them. Treat yourself to a raw juice with organic carrots, green apples, spinach, kale and ginger (spicy) for breakfast.

Drinking plenty of water keeps the body hydrated. Squeezing fresh lemon juice into it makes the water more acidic in the glass, but miraculously increases your pH when you drink it.

Milk…healthy or not? The only species that should be drinking cow’s milk are baby cows, no matter what the advertisements say. Dairy products are very acidic. Cow’s milk leaches calcium from your bones in order to neutralize the acid it contains. The only food product worse for you is cheese. Healthy alternatives to cow’s milk include almond, hemp or soy milk, unsweetened (of course). Making drastic changes in your diet is almost always a recipe for disaster. Small changes implemented over time are the best way to keep to the program.

By slowly changing your diet from an animal based acidic diet to a healthier, alkaline forming diet, you’ll feel younger and stronger while being proactive towards your own good health.

Patricia San Pedro felt both confidence and trepidation the first time she went out in public with a thin layer of hair and no wig.

Having gone through a double mastectomy, chemotherapy and reconstructive surgery, she was sure her vanity could handle an outing to Roma Café on Calle Ocho.

When a little boy pointed indiscreetly and told his mother she was missing some hair, she simply explained that she had more hair then the bald man sitting nearby.

San Pedro, a South Florida executive at American Airlines and The Miami Herald before starting her own production company, has been determined to view her ordeal on the bright side.

“I turned everything around,” explained San Pedro, 55, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 and is the creator of PositivelyPat.com, a cancer support website. “I didn’t focus on chemo as a nasty chemical. I thought of it as sacred juice and felt lucky it was available to heal me.”

In addition to her website, San Pedro has published an e-book titled The Cancer Dancer, which is available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The English version of the book, including patient-to-patient and caregiver tips, is also available in hard copy.

San Pedro will be doing a book reading and signing at 4 p.m. Sunday at Books and Books in Coral Gables, 265 Aragon Ave.

She’s also shared her story on film.

Just hours after her biopsy results came back, San Pedro began making a documentary of her breast cancer journey. The hardest part though, she recalls, was telling her father, who had lost his wife to breast cancer years earlier. Antonio San Pedro reacted numbly to the news and cried through the night, she says.

Three years later, she has turned her footage and journal entries into a source of support and information for countless other women dealing with the disease.

The documentary, Tengo Cancer (I Have Cancer), aired in October during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Discovery Familia, a Spanish-language cable channel. It has also aired in Latin America.

“I was totally against filming,” said Lydia Sacasa, San Pedro’s childhood friend. “I thought she was commercializing it because the camera was on 24/7, but when I saw the final outcome I saw the purpose.”

Before the cancer, San Pedro co-wrote Dish & Tell: Life, Love and Secrets in 2005 with a group of businesswomen known as the Miami Bombshells.

“The information is critical for caregivers. We’re clueless,” explained Sacasa, who cared for San Pedro throughout her battle.

San Pedro’s website, PositivelyPat.com, features monthly articles by “Pat’s Posse” and provides a space for women with breast cancer to share their own experiences. Pat’s Posse includes University of Miami oncologists Dr. Stefan Gluck and Dr. Robert Derhagopian, as well as other health, wellness and spiritual specialists.

One of the tips that San Pedro thinks is important to share is that women with dense breasts cannot be accurately screened with a mammogram, but also should get a sonogram or MRI. She says it’s important for all women to get mammograms, but those with dense breasts need to take the extra step.

“If your doctor won’t order [a sonogram or MRI], get a new doctor,” said San Pedro, who lives in Coral Gables. “And if you don’t know whether your breasts are dense, find out.”

In 2007, the most recent year the CDC says numbers are available, 202,964 women in the United States were diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,598 women in the United States died from the disease.

Debbie Cabrera, another cancer survivor who had her final reconstruction surgery last week, was sent to the “Link of Hope Sistas,” San Pedro’s support group, by a mutual friend.

“She took me under her wing,” said Cabrera, who said San Pedro hosted gatherings at her house “where we shared info about health, nutrition, and sex.”

“We’re all there for each other and the new ones,” she added.

San Pedro believes her documentary, book and website, are her ways of paying for the love and support she received throughout her breast cancer fight. She calls on her Link of Hope Sistas and other women who find her tips helpful to help others as well.

San Pedro hopes to continue receiving self-taped footage, tips and stories from other women going through their journey with breast cancer, so that information continues to be shared.

Cabrera, who appears in a video tip on PositivelyPat.com, is all for helping others.

“I think filming is empowering,” she said. “You get to be strong for someone else.”
