Kudos to Angelina Jolie for taking a proactive step to minimize her risk of breast and ovarian cancer. She is an example to others who have tested positive to the BRCA gene.

Her editorial in the NYT is worth a read: Angelina Jolie’s Medical Choice

Pat Wins an Emmy Award for her documentary The Cancer Dancer and dedicates her award to all survivors:  Pat’s Acceptance Speech at Emmy Awards

Welcome Beautiful People,

I write this with joy and love in my heart, as today I celebrate 5 years  since my breast cancer diagnosis.  My latest blog speaks to this…please check it out:  From Diagnosis to Dancing.

I believe that everything happens for a reason, as cliche as that may sound.  It’s kind of hard to swallow, I know, when what’s happening is painful and scary, like breast cancer was for me.  Sure, it’s great to say that you will find blessings even in the midst of feeling crappy.  In theory, that sounds great. However, in practice, when you’re overwhelmed by the problem(s)….not so easy.

I’m here to provide a bit of hope and insight on how to flip the switch to the positive side and how to find joy, even in the midst of turmoil.

If you’ve been diagnosed, reach out to me and my Link of Hope Sistas.  Turn to the Video Tips section of this website for useful information that can help you on your journey.  My book, The Cancer Dancer is filled with useful tips for you and your caregivers. This is all about supporting one another.

Life goes on….I went from being diagnosed with breast cancer (the same disease that took my young mom), to just winning an Emmy Award for a documentary based on my cancer journey called, The Cancer Dancer. Buddhists call this turning poison into medicine. I love that saying!

I started videotaping four hours after hearing the words, ‘You have cancer’ because I intuitively felt that I was meant to help others through my own dance with cancer.  I was patient, but also talent…and at times videographer and then producer.  My incredible friends helped me videotape and edit, and organize all my videos of the one-year healing journey. I could not have done it without them.  Through it all: a double mastectomy, seventeen sessions of chemotherapy and several reconstruction procedures, the camera never stopped rolling. Discovery Familia in the United States and Discovery Home & Health in Latin America aired the documentary during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month.  The video on this page is a 9 minute highlight reel of my journey.

My dance with cancer brought me closer to peace than anything ever has. I am not the same person I was before my diagnosis and I am grateful for that. I now savor every moment of every day and make the time to have fun and play. I enjoy life and live with a deep sense of purpose: to give, serve and use what I’ve learned to make a difference in the lives of others.

We have choices in life. We can’t always control the events that take place – but we CAN control how we respond and what we do from that moment on.

Welcome to your new online community. I hope this site, at the very least, gives you some inspiration and the desire to prove yourself more powerful than the opposing force. I hope you come back often and enjoy what you find on these pages.

Joy is the Choice!
